The Darkness

The rise of the British rock group The Darkness is a true tale of triumph over adversity.

Deemed too rock n’ roll for the charts by the music industry, they took charge of their own destiny and produced an album, Permission To Land.

They have since propelled themselves to stadium-sized rock stars in just one year.

In this edition of The South Bank Show, Melvyn Bragg talks to the group and director Susan Shaw films this meteoric rise - beginning backstage at this year's Brits and climaxing at the 2004 Reading Festival, where the group were headliners.

The programme also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage at the Ivor Novello Awards, life in Lowestoft and extensive on-the-road footage as they attempt to break America (including un-seen concert footage from the States).
